Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ben Sims during mandatory minicamp. The play marked Willis' longest completion in any open Dolphins practice this spring.
espn.comMiami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ben Sims during team drills at the team's mandatory minicamp in Miami Gardens, Florida. The completion traveled over the middle of the field and threaded between two defenders. It was Willis' longest completion of any open Dolphins practice.
Tight end Greg Dulcich said Willis has great pocket presence in addition to being mobile. Dulcich added that Sims made a heads-up play by getting his head around, allowing Willis to deliver the ball. The play occurred during the June 19 session.
Willis signed with the Dolphins as a free agent in the 2026 offseason. Other than limited prior overlap with center Aaron Brewer from their time together with the Tennessee Titans, Willis is adjusting to an entirely new group of teammates. Coach Jeff Hafley said on June 2 that the relationship between Willis and his pass catchers remains a work in progress after six practices with limited reps.
Hafley noted the Dolphins have a lot of young wideouts who just came in and that building chemistry will require time and additional repetitions. The Dolphins released former All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill in February 2026 and traded Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos in March 2026. They signed Jalen Tolbert and Tutu Atwell in free agency and drafted Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell.
No player has emerged as the clear No. 1 receiver during OTAs or minicamp. Hafley said he was not expecting a No. 1 receiver to emerge during spring practices. He described the focus as learning the offense, running routes, and identifying individual skill sets.
Third-year receiver Malik Washington is one of the few carryovers from the previous regime. Hafley said Washington has done a really good job with the catch and run and is getting better as a route runner. The minicamp session continues the Dolphins' offseason work under first-year head coach Hafley.
