Man arrested on suspicion of murdering former UK minister Ann Widdecombe

A 28-year-old man was arrested in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on suspicion of murdering former UK government minister Ann Widdecombe at her bungalow in Haytor, Devon. Police believe she was killed around midday Wednesday and was found dead on Thursday morning after sustaining serious injuries.

Devon and Cornwall Police said investigators are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death. CCTV footage appears to show a young man leaving an address linked to the suspect around 7am on Wednesday, the day Widdecombe is believed to have been killed.

Investigation details The suspect’s home in Rotherham is approximately a four-hour drive from Widdecombe’s property. Neighbours reported seeing a man place a wooden pole into a red car before driving away on Wednesday morning. Forensic officers later searched a terraced house in the town’s Kimberworth Park area under police cordon.

At a Sunday press conference, Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said there was no information to suggest the incident was terrorism-related. Detectives remain open-minded about motive, police stated.

Political context Reform sources questioned whether the suspect might have been motivated by Widdecombe’s politics and said the party is reviewing emails sent to her in the weeks before her death. The party has committed to providing round-the-clock security for its MPs.

Senior Labour backbenchers plan to seek a cap on political donations when the government’s elections bill returns to the Commons this week. A Reform source said the proposed limits would leave the party without funds to pay for MP security, which is currently funded by donors.
