The man failed to comply with lawful orders and made physical contact with a Secret Service member before being taken into custody without further incident, Townsend said.
The Doral Police Department charged him with disorderly conduct and resisting without violence. President Trump was not at the golf club during the arrest, and the incident did not affect the established security posture for his visit, Townsend stated. , where Trump and other officials were present.
Trump was rushed off the dais during the incident, and a Secret Service agent was hit by a round but protected by a bulletproof vest. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, faces charges including attempted assassination of the president and firearm offenses for allegedly opening fire with a shotgun and shooting the agent.
Allen has not yet entered a plea and remains in custody after waiving his right to challenge pretrial detention for now.
A preliminary hearing in his case is scheduled for May 11. , federal Magistrate Judge Zia M. Faruqui compared Allen's jail treatment to that of defendants charged in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, questioning why Allen faced stricter confinement.
Faruqui, who has overseen Jan. 6 cases for years, said he never had a Jan. 6 defendant placed in five-point restraints or a safe cell. Faruqui stated that Allen appeared to be treated differently than anyone he had observed in the city's jail system.
Defense attorneys reported that repeated mental health screenings found no indication Allen posed a risk to himself, yet he was placed on suicide-watch protocols. Public defender Eugene Ohm said Allen was initially on full suicide watch, later downgraded, but still restricted from phone access, legal materials, and personal items including a Bible.
Tony Towns, a representative for the District of Columbia Department of Corrections, said the placement stemmed from an ongoing psychiatric evaluation.
Prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine noted that Allen's initial status was influenced by post-arrest statements, including telling FBI agents he did not expect to survive the attack. Faruqui interpreted this as an expectation of being shot by law enforcement, not suicidal intent.
The dinner shooting follows a 2024 incident at Trump's International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, where Secret Service agents spotted Ryan Routh allegedly aiming a rifle at then-candidate Trump.
Agents engaged in gunfire with Routh before arresting him, and he was convicted of attempting to assassinate a presidential candidate and sentenced to life in prison.
