nationalpost.comA 51-year-old New Jersey man remained sedated at a local hospital Tuesday while facing five counts of assault with intent to cause serious personal injury with a weapon, law-enforcement sources said. The charges stem from a Sunday incident at Penn Station in which five people were slashed. The man is also accused of a 2022 stabbing in Newark that left a victim with nine stitches.
His common-law spouse of 14 years told The Post they had been separated for three years because of domestic violence. She said he had hit her with a closed fist and that she last saw him two weeks ago when he knocked on their door. Court records show the man pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the Newark case and received two years of probation.
He remained out of jail during probation despite at least one violation and an arrest in a domestic violence incident.
An acquaintance who has known the man for roughly 15 years said he had recently completed drug rehabilitation and appeared healthier before the recent incidents. The acquaintance attributed the change in behavior to drug use. A manager at a Dunkin' Donuts location across from the Long Branch Railroad Station said the man was a regular customer who sometimes yelled at people at the station.
