Man Dies After Shark Attack Off Western Australia

A 38-year-old man died after being attacked by a great white shark off Rottnest Island, west of Perth, Western Australia police said. m. local time on Saturday. The man was transported by boat to Geordie Bay Jetty, where paramedics and police performed CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development told AFP that the shark measured four metres and confirmed it was a great white. Images from the scene showed ambulance and rescue crews at Horseshoe Reef, a popular diving and fishing area.

The attack is the first fatal shark attack in Western Australia since March 2025, when a man was killed while surfing at Wharton Beach. Earlier this year, several attacks along the eastern coast led to the closure of multiple New South Wales beaches.

A fatal attack also occurred off Sydney in September 2025, and another took place in 2022. Australia records an average of 20 shark attacks per year, with most occurring along the east and southeast coasts, according to the Institute of Health and Welfare.
