The attack is the first fatal shark attack in Western Australia since March 2025, when a man was killed while surfing at Wharton Beach. Earlier this year, several attacks along the eastern coast led to the closure of multiple New South Wales beaches.
A fatal attack also occurred off Sydney in September 2025, and another took place in 2022. Australia records an average of 20 shark attacks per year, with most occurring along the east and southeast coasts, according to the Institute of Health and Welfare.
