Defense lawyers for Luigi Mangione accused federal prosecutors of leaking details about possible plea discussions to prejudice their client. The report preceded a July 6 hearing in the federal case tied to the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
uctoday.comAttorneys for Luigi Mangione accused federal prosecutors on Thursday of leaking information about possible plea discussions to prejudice their client ahead of a scheduled July 6 hearing. Mangione faces state and federal charges in the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a healthcare industry conference in Midtown Manhattan. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
NBC News New York reported that Mangione's attorneys had held talks with federal prosecutors about a possible plea deal. In a statement to CBS News, defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo called the report troubling and part of a deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to manipulate public opinion and violate Mangione's right to a fair trial.
"Every defendant in America is presumed innocent until proven guilty, including Luigi, who has to fight the same charges twice," Agnifilo said.
Legal experts told CBS News that discussions about plea agreements between prosecutors and defense attorneys are common throughout the process. CBS News legal analyst Jessica Levinson said such conversations occur at various stages. Former Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg described the typical exchange in which defense counsel inquires about a deal and prosecutors respond with what they can offer.
Plea agreements can be reached up until trial, as shown when Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty last July to the murders of four University of Idaho students to avoid the death penalty. Earlier this month Mangione's attorneys indicated they might pursue a psychiatric defense in the state case. On June 18 they withdrew notice of an intent to argue extreme emotional disturbance.
The state trial is scheduled to begin in September and the federal interstate stalking trial in November. CBS News has reached out to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
