Marcos Denies Extension for Retiring Calabarzon Police Chief Despite Remulla Endorsement

Malacañang announced July 9 that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. did not approve a service extension for retiring Calabarzon police chief Police Brigadier General Hansel Marantan. Undersecretary Claire Castro stated there was no extension for the general and that he could help in other ways.
Marantan reaches mandatory retirement age 56 on July 10 under Section 39 of Republic Act No. 6975. Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla, who oversees the Philippine National Police, had written to the National Police Commission to endorse the extension.
His letter said the request was made in the interest of the service to ensure continuity in critical and ongoing high-impact operations spearheaded by Marantan. The law permits the president to grant a one-year extension for officers at the rank of police brigadier general and above. Such extensions remain uncommon except for PNP chiefs.
Before his Calabarzon post, Marantan served as Davao City police chief during the arrest of Apollo Quiboloy. In 2013, as a lieutenant colonel, he led a checkpoint operation in Quezon province where 13 people died; a Manila court cleared him and 11 other officers in 2025.
