Marina Mabrey scores 53 points as Toronto defeats Los Angeles 125-97

Marina Mabrey scored 53 points to tie the WNBA single-game scoring record as the Toronto Tempo defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 125-97 on June 26. Mabrey made 9 of 18 three-point attempts. She reached 39 points after three quarters and added 14 more in the fourth.

Toronto never trailed and built a 19-6 lead less than four minutes into the game behind three-pointers from Mabrey, Maria Conde and Julie Allemand. The Tempo’s largest lead reached 35 points. Toronto finished 20 of 42 from three-point range.

Conde scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds while going 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Allemand went 3 of 3 from three-point distance for 13 points and recorded 14 assists. Laura Juskaite added 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

The Sparks made 11 of 38 three-pointers. Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby each scored 21 points, and Rae Burrell added 17. Ogwumike grabbed seven rebounds and Hamby secured nine. Starting guards Erica Wheeler and Ariel Atkins were in foul trouble, and the Sparks played without Cameron Brink due to an ankle injury.

Toronto improved to 9-9 while the Sparks fell to 8-9. The Sparks entered the game after splitting a two-game series with Toronto in Los Angeles the previous month but played without leading scorer Kelsey Plum, who was sidelined by a leg injury.
