Lt. Gen. Eric Austin said the service's 2030 modernization timeline is too slow during a CSIS discussion last week. The Corps has begun receiving MADIS and NMESIS systems in Okinawa amid drone threats in the Middle East.
Lt. Gen. Eric Austin, the Marine Corps deputy commandant for combat development and integration, said the service must accelerate delivery of new air defense systems to match evolving threats. He spoke last week at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event on Marine Corps modernization.
"We're on a path for our 2030 vision, but guess what, it's not fast enough," Austin said. " He added that the ground-based air defense portfolio had grown insufficient since the 1990s, when forces relied on point-defense systems that no longer address current missile and drone risks.
The Corps budget request for the next fiscal year includes the Marine Air Defense Integrated System, which pairs two Joint Light Tactical Vehicles into a short-range defense platform.
In June 2026, Marines in Okinawa received the first MADIS units along with the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System. Austin noted that some systems are already forward-deployed but said quantities remain inadequate for needs in U.S. Central Command.

He linked the requirement to lessons from the war in Iran, where Iranian-designed Shahed drones have been launched in large numbers.
Business Insider reported that six U.S. service members were killed in Kuwait in March 2026 after a Shahed drone penetrated defenses. Three additional service members died in a 2024 drone strike on Tower 22 in Jordan.
