The court ordered Høiby to pay victims approximately $61,000 in compensation. The offenses occurred between 2018 and 2024. One rape took place at the Crown Prince’s Skaugum estate in 2018 and the second occurred in Oslo in 2024.
Prosecutors had requested a sentence of seven years and seven months. Defense lawyers asked for acquittal on the rape charges and a maximum sentence of 18 months. The six-week trial concluded in March.
Evidence included messages, images, and videos from Høiby’s cellphone. He has remained in police custody since early February. Høiby, 29, was not present in court on Monday because of health reasons and watched the verdict via video link from prison.
The sentence is not final. He can appeal. "It is only natural to consider appealing the serious charges for which he was convicted and which he did not admit," defense lawyer Ellen Holager Andenaes told AFP.
Høiby is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon. He joined the royal household in 2001 but holds no royal title or official duties. Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 52, has pulmonary fibrosis and was placed on Norway’s national lung-transplant list this month.
