Markings appeared on the west lawn of the Washington Monument on the National Mall on Thursday that appeared to form the numbers "86 47." Photos taken from the top of the Washington Monument showed the numbers in the grass, with the "8" most visible and the "4" least visible. A Reuters photographer observed the markings shortly before federal authorities arrived.

Park Police responded at approximately 11:30 a.m. to a report of vandalism. Officers stated that the numbers "8647" were marked in the grass and that grass samples had been collected for testing. A White House spokesperson stated that any threat against the president is taken seriously.
