axios.comMars Petcare issued a voluntary recall of two lots of Pedigree canned wet dog food on July 2, 2026, after the products were fraudulently diverted and sold nationwide instead of being destroyed. The Independent reported that the recall covers 13.2-ounce cans of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor bearing lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.
The cans had failed internal quality checks and were dispatched to a third-party vendor for destruction.
A Mars Petcare spokeswoman said the affected products were never intended to enter the marketplace and had been sent for destruction after failing to meet rigorous safety and quality standards before they appear to have been fraudulently diverted and sold in the U.S. The company stated it is working closely with the appropriate authorities as they investigate the diversion of these products into the marketplace.
The recalled metal may contain metal or plastic foreign material.
Swallowing the parts could cause choking, cuts or blockages in the gastrointestinal tract. Mars Petcare said it had received no reports of pet illnesses or injuries related to the food as of July 2. The company previously issued a voluntary recall in 2024 over similar concerns.
The Pedigree action follows a May recall by Albright’s Raw Pet Food of its Chicken Recipe for Dogs Complete and Balanced due to potential salmonella contamination and a February recall by Go Raw LLC that was expanded in recent weeks to cover an additional lot of Steve’s Real Food Chicken Recipe Freeze Dried sold in 20 states over potentially low thiamine levels.
The FDA did not respond to requests for updates on the Pedigree recall by July 6.
