Marvel Comics will move its comics and franchise division from New York City to Burbank, California, with more than 100 staff asked to relocate. The shift, announced in a Thursday town hall, is set for completion by July 2027.
New York PostMarvel Comics is relocating its comics and franchise division from New York City to Burbank, California, New York Post reported. The move ends nearly nine decades of operations in Manhattan and places the unit alongside Marvel's film and television teams. The decision was announced to employees during a Thursday town hall meeting and detailed in a company-wide memo.
More than 100 New York-based staff members will be asked to relocate to Southern California over the next 12 months, with the process expected to finish by July 2027. Marvel executives Brad Winderbaum and David Abdo wrote in the memo that the relocation will position the team beside the broader creative organization.
The company plans to begin orientation sessions for employees and their families to support the transition.
Leadership changes accompany the move. Stephen Wacker will return as editor-in-chief after more than 15 years at the company earlier in his career. C.B. Cebulski, who has led Marvel Comics since 2017, will transition to a Japan-based role overseeing Asia-originated graphic fiction and manga.
Winderbaum and Abdo stated that New York remains woven into Marvel's identity even as operations consolidate in California. The company said it hopes affected employees will move west and committed to supporting them through the change. The relocation follows a similar step by rival DC Comics, which moved its editorial operations to Burbank in 2015.
It occurs amid broader industry consolidation, including Warner Bros. Discovery's plan to split into two companies and Paramount's merger with Skydance Media.
