Washington ExaminerThe governor of Maryland said he would not prevent his underage son from transitioning genders if the son chose to pursue that path, but drew a line at the use of puberty blockers. The comments were made during an appearance on The Patrick Bet-David podcast, with the episode released on Tuesday.
In the two-hour conversation the governor discussed his views on gerrymandering, the Iran war, homelessness in California and transgender issues.
When asked specifically about allowing his teenage son to transition, the governor said he would continue to offer his love and support. He stated he would seek to understand his son's feelings and remain involved in the process. "You know, it's my son, so I love him regardless," the governor said.
"And he's always going to have my undying love. That's me, right? I want to make sure that I'm involved in understanding where he is, how he's feeling, the way he's feeling, why he thinks it's important.
The governor was also asked whether he would advise his son to wait until age 18 before transitioning. He replied that he would not advise against something his son felt was right if they maintained a close relationship, while emphasizing his desire for his son to feel safe in his own skin and decisions. At age 14 the governor said he would want to be involved in that process.
"I'm not going to condemn him, nor castigate him," the governor said. "I'm not going to kick him out of the house.
He said as a parent he would not allow his underage child to use them. "It's not a choice that I would make," the governor said. "I think that it is a very personal decision between these families, and honestly, for the kids that are going through this.
The governor added that the decision is one a child cannot make on their own. The governor is running for reelection this year in Maryland and is heavily favored to win a second term.
