Maryland Man With Prior Murder Conviction Charged in Shooting and Carjacking Spree

axios.comA Maryland man previously convicted of murder faces 66 charges after police say he carried out a shooting and carjacking spree that injured two people in Prince George’s County on Friday. Larry James Simpson, 68, is scheduled to appear in court Monday. Police allege he carjacked two vehicles and fired shots at multiple people during incidents at five locations.
Simpson was sentenced to life plus 40 years in 1987 for first-degree murder, robbery with a deadly weapon, and assault, according to court records cited by The Washington Post. He was later released following a health evaluation. In 2022, Simpson received an in-custody evaluation from the Maryland Department of Health and was placed on one-year unsupervised probation, court records show.
The department did not respond to a request for comment.
An off-duty Prince George’s County police officer began following Simpson after seeing him carjack a vehicle, WUSA9 reported. Simpson is accused of pointing a long gun from a car window and firing multiple shots across several locations. One incident left a 64-year-old man cut by glass.
