Massachusetts High School Pitcher Throws 101 mph, Projected First-Round MLB Draft Pick
An 18-year-old left-hander from Bishop Feehan High School has drawn first-round projections ahead of the July MLB Draft. The 6-foot-9 pitcher threw a 20-strikeout no-hitter this season and is committed to the University of Texas.
CBS SportsATTLEBORO, MASS. — An 18-year-old left-handed pitcher from Bishop Feehan High School recorded a 20-strikeout no-hitter this spring and is projected as a first-round selection in the July MLB Draft. The player stands 6 feet 9 inches tall and has reached 101 mph on his fastball.
He did not pitch in a recent game against Attleboro High School that ended 2-1, yet his presence drew continued attention to the program.
Sports listed the pitcher at No. 21 overall in its first mock draft. He is committed to Texas but is not expected to play college baseball. His coach said the player wants to be selected with the first overall pick and win awards including a Cy Young and a World Series title. The pitcher stated that becoming a first-round pick would be the first step toward those goals.
The pitcher gained roughly 40 pounds between his sophomore and junior years and increased his fastball velocity from 85 mph to 96 mph. He missed his entire junior season after undergoing an elbow procedure and returned this spring throwing harder than before.
Scouts have noted the fastball's velocity and extension while indicating that secondary pitches require further development. Multiple executives cited the general difficulty of projecting high school pitchers, noting that 16 of 53 first-round high school pitchers drafted from 2013 to 2022 did not reach the major leagues.
The player also led his school's basketball team to its first state championship, scoring 36 points and grabbing 22 rebounds in the title game. Bishop Feehan opens the state baseball tournament on Sunday.
