Massachusetts Issues Heat Advisory for Most of State Through Wednesday
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for most of Massachusetts from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday. State agencies opened splash pads early and issued guidance on hydration and outdoor activity.
The Boston GlobeM. m. Wednesday, excluding the Berkshires, South Coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands. The advisory covers the first days expected to reach the 90s after Monday's high in the 80s. The Healey administration stated that early-season heat can be especially dangerous because people may not yet be acclimated to higher temperatures.
The Healey administration advised residents to wear light-colored and breathable clothing, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors who are homebound, elderly, or disabled. It also warned against leaving children or pets in parked vehicles. The state opened 14 splash pads and spray decks ahead of schedule, with 11 located in Boston and Cambridge.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation recommended scheduling travel during cooler morning or evening hours and checking vehicle fluid levels.
Boston recorded a high of 74 degrees on Monday. The city operates 18 indoor and outdoor community center pools, 11 of which are currently open. Residents interviewed at Boston Common and Castle Island described enjoying the warmer weather while planning to limit outdoor time during peak heat hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.
