Matisse Thybulle Signs One-Year Deal with Los Angeles Lakers After Portland Offers Non-Guaranteed Contract

Free agent forward Matisse Thybulle agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. The two-time All-Defensive team member spoke with coach JJ Redick and Luka Doncic about his role and chose the Lakers to strengthen wing defense. Thybulle shot 41.8 percent from three-point range across 45 games over the past two seasons.
He led the NBA in steals and deflections per 36 minutes last season among players who appeared in at least 20 games. He enters his eighth NBA season. Thybulle discussed a return to the Portland Trail Blazers but believed the team did not pursue him seriously.
Portland offered non-guaranteed deals for most of free agency. The Lakers explored sign-and-trade options that would have raised his salary, yet the sides reached no agreement. The signing brings the Lakers to 16 guaranteed salaries.
The team has until opening night in late October to complete trades that could reduce the roster. In a separate move the same night, the Lakers agreed to a two-way contract with forward Arthur Kaluma. Kaluma played in the Lakers' G League program during the 2025-26 season and averaged nearly 19 points while shooting 61 percent overall and 50 percent from three-point range in Las Vegas summer league this month.
