Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson played his 741st straight game on July 10 to surpass Dale Murphy's franchise mark of 740. The streak began after his last absence in 2021.
winnipegfreepress.comAtlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson played in his 741st consecutive game with the team on July 10 against the St. Louis Cardinals, breaking Dale Murphy's franchise record of 740 games set from 1981 to 1986; his overall streak of 875 games ranks ninth in major-league history and sits 20 games short of Stan Musial’s mark, ESPN reported.
Olson signed with Atlanta as a free agent ahead of the 2022 season after playing parts of six seasons with the Oakland Athletics.
He has started 740 of his 741 games for the Braves. His only non-start occurred on Sept. 24, 2022, at Philadelphia, when he entered as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the eighth inning. Braves manager Walt Weiss said the feat stands out in a sport played nearly every day.
"It's quite an accomplishment," Weiss said. "We play virtually every day, so to do something like that is mind boggling, really. " Olson has played in 875 consecutive games overall, the ninth-longest streak in major league history.
That total sits 20 games short of Stan Musial's 895-game mark with the Cardinals from 1952 to 1957. Olson last sat out a game on May 1, 2021, missing three contests with the Athletics after a left eye contusion during batting practice on April 29.
