Document checks, mass expulsions, coastal surveillance and arrests of smugglers have reduced migration departures from Mauritania over the past year. Members of the Mauritanian Coast Guard were patrolling off the coast of Nouadhibou on April 23. Ahmed, a 34-year-old Senegalese man, said everyone wants to leave but no one can get through since security was stepped up.
Ahmed keeps a low profile in Mauritania to evade constant police checks. His name has been changed for security purposes.
