Mavericks Part Ways With Coach Jason Kidd After Five Seasons

The Dallas Mavericks announced Tuesday that they have mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Jason Kidd after five seasons. The team said the decision came as new president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri evaluates the future of the basketball program.

Ujiri stated that the organization believes this is the right moment for a new direction. He said the franchise has high expectations and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention. The Mavericks will conduct a thorough search for the next head coach and continue to evaluate the entire basketball operations staff.

He led the team to multiple postseason appearances, including the NBA Finals in 2024 and the Western Conference finals in 2022. His overall record with Dallas stands at 205 wins and 205 losses. The team posted a 136-87 mark when star guard Luka Doncic was in the lineup and 69-118 when he was not.

During the 2025-26 season, the first full campaign after the February 2025 trade of Doncic, Dallas finished 26-56 even with Rookie of the Year winner Cooper Flagg.

Kidd still has four years and more than $40 million remaining on his contract, according to ESPN. Ujiri had been non-committal about Kidd's future during an introductory press conference earlier this month, saying the organization would evaluate every aspect of its operations.
