Mayor Bass' Brother Files Claim in Wildfire Lawsuit Against City

Kenneth Bass and his wife Cindy joined a class-action lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles on May 18, alleging the city failed to fill the Santa Ynez Reservoir when a wildfire broke out on January 7, 2025. The suit, first reported by L.A. Material, names more than 180 plaintiffs and 18 public and private defendants, including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Kenneth Bass alleged he and his wife suffered smoke inhalation injuries and emotional distress after their home was destroyed. The couple had owned a property with a pool and views of the Malibu Pier.
A Frantz Law Group attorney representing Kenneth Bass stated the couple's names were added as part of a mass tort process involving nearly 40,000 victims. The attorney said family connections are irrelevant and that the couple is entitled to the same privacy as other plaintiffs.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said the city is confident it is not liable for the wildfires. " Bass adviser Yusef Robb told reporters there was "nothing new here" and noted thousands of people are plaintiffs in the action.
Bass was elected mayor in 2022 after more than a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives and faces a re-election campaign.
