Mbappé Calls Paraguayan Senator Despicable; Senator Had Mocked His Origin and Education After France’s 1-0 Win

Kylian Mbappe called Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla a despicable woman and unworthy of her position in a social media post after France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the World Cup round of 16 on July 4. Mbappe scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the match played in Philadelphia. The contest included multiple altercations between players.

After the final whistle, Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill threw the ball at Mbappe. Gill later stated that he lost his temper when Mbappe tried to shake his hand and received no response. Amarilla posted several messages on X that mocked Mbappe's origin and education.

One post stated that Mbappe did not even learn to write and referenced coconuts and chimpanzees. Another described him as a colonized Cameroonian pretending hard to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant, and ugly. The senator also wrote that Gill should have shown Mbappe the finger and claimed she does the same in the senate without consequence.

Mbappe replied that Amarilla does not represent Paraguay and that her remarks overshadowed the efforts of the Paraguayan players. He added that he would never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world. France is scheduled to face Morocco in the quarterfinals on July 9.
