France defeated Iraq 3-0 in a World Cup match at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 22 after a delay of more than two hours caused by thunder and lightning. Kylian Mbappé scored once before the stoppage and once after it, bringing his tournament total to four goals and his career World Cup total to 16, matching Miroslav Klose.
Mbappé also recorded his sixth multigoal World Cup game, moving past Brazil's Ronaldo on the career scoring list.
The forward made his 100th international appearance for France in the match. Ousmane Dembélé assisted Mbappé's second goal and scored France's third, his first World Cup goal. FIFA delayed the match at least 15 minutes after players left the field at halftime.
Lightning within eight miles requires a 30-minute evacuation of seating areas under tournament rules. France coach Didier Deschamps said the team played cards in the dressing room while waiting for the game to resume.
He added that the long break was a first for him and that he hoped it would be the last, noting the team has another match in four days. Mbappé said there was no personal competition with Lionel Messi.
