MBTA completes infrastructure upgrades on Red and Mattapan lines
Officials announced Tuesday that signal, track, and power work finished during recent service suspensions. The projects covered sections of both lines between Broadway and Ashmont and between Ashmont and Mattapan.
The Boston GlobeThe MBTA announced Tuesday that critical infrastructure improvements were recently completed on the Red and Mattapan lines. The work took place during service suspensions between Broadway and Ashmont stations on the Red Line and between Ashmont and Mattapan stations on the Mattapan Line, officials said.
The service suspension allowed the T to perform testing and commissioning work for the Red Line’s new digital signal system, track and tamping work, and major power infrastructure upgrades, T officials said in the statement. All of the work completed will improve system resiliency, modernize aging infrastructure, and support continued reliable service for Red Line and Mattapan Line riders.
Additional projects completed Other work included upgrades to the Codman Yard Facility power substation, which powers the Mattapan line; inspections of bridges and retaining walls at various locations; ramp repairs to make the system more accessible; and a conduit over the Adams Street Bridge near Milton Station, officials said.
Crews also performed track and tamping work between the Savin Hill and Fields Corner stops, officials said. The MBTA’s general manager, who is also the state’s interim transportation secretary, praised crews for completing the work and thanked the riders for their patience during the service suspensions.
“I’m proud of the MBTA for completing another major step in modernizing the Red Line, which leads to improved reliability for all of our riders,” the general manager said in a statement.
