McDonald’s Tests New Google-Backed AI Drive-Thru System After Scrapping IBM Partnership Last Year

U.S. locations. The system, nicknamed Archy, takes orders in English and Spanish and monitors restaurant operations to alert managers to potential problems.

A demonstration shared on X by the account McFranchisee showed the AI processing drive-thru orders. The account stated that ArchIQ has processed over one million transactions, with approximately 90 percent completed without human escalations.

U.S. Is receiving Google Edge Cloud blades installed in anticipation of a wider rollout. The system is being developed with Google. McDonald’s previously partnered with IBM to test AI-powered drive-thru ordering at more than 100 restaurants.

That program was scrapped in 2024 after customers complained about mistakes, including unwanted menu items being added to orders. After ending the IBM partnership, McDonald’s said it would continue exploring voice ordering solutions more broadly. ArchIQ represents the company’s next attempt at the technology.

The system is designed to do more than take orders. McFranchisee stated that Archy will act as a master brain to help managers run a better restaurant and alert them to potential bottlenecks or issues.
