McIlroy Calls for Quiet After Gallery Noise Disrupts Rose on 15th Hole at Truist Championship
Rory McIlroy intervened during the second round at Quail Hollow when excessive gallery and volunteer noise forced Justin Rose to back away from his approach shot on the 15th hole. Rose, who threw his club in anger the previous day, finished the round at one under par and eight strokes off the lead held by Im Sung-hae. McIlroy, playing limited events, shot 67 to sit four shots back at five under.
usmagazine.comRory McIlroy shouted "hey" toward the crowd on the 15th hole during the second round of the Truist Championship after excessive noise from the gallery and course volunteers disturbed Justin Rose. Rose backed away from his ball and was unable to concentrate on his approach shot. He gestured for silence, prompting a spotter to call for quiet.
The incident occurred at Quail Hollow in North Carolina. Rose had thrown his club down in anger during the first round on Thursday. The 45-year-old Englishman finished the second round at one under par.
That left him eight strokes behind leader Im Sung-hae of South Korea after the second round. Tommy Fleetwood stood in second place at eight under par. Adam Fitzpatrick sat in fourth place, one shot behind Fleetwood.
McIlroy, 36, shot 67, four under par, in the second round to reach five under par for the tournament. That placed him four shots off the lead. He had played just one event in the seven weeks prior to the Truist Championship.
McIlroy has won the Truist Championship, or its predecessor event at Quail Hollow, four times. " The Northern Irishman spoke warmly of Rose's continued excellence. "What he is doing at his age is incredible, and I think everyone would love to see him get another major, because I think he deserves it," McIlroy said.
He added that Rose's sustained competitiveness offered him a model for the years ahead. "What Rose is doing is sort of the blueprint for me," McIlroy said. Rose won the 2013 US Open at Merion and continues to pursue a second major championship more than a decade later.
GB News reported on the incident and the players' positions. Rose's frustrations at Quail Hollow reflect the pressure of his lengthy search for another significant title. The 15th-hole disturbance came shortly after he had challenged closely at Augusta.
McIlroy's limited recent competitive play added context to his solid recovery on Friday.
