McIlroy, Cantlay, Kim, Wiesberger, Hojgaard Share Scottish Open Lead at 65
Five players posted 5-under-par rounds on July 9 at The Renaissance Club. McIlroy and Scheffler offered comments on their opening rounds ahead of the British Open.

Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Tom Kim, Bernd Wiesberger and Rasmus Hojgaard each shot 5-under-par 65 to share the first-round lead at the 2026 Genesis Scottish Open on July 9 at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. McIlroy started on the 10th hole and made an 18-foot eagle putt on the par-5 first hole. He added birdies on two of the three par-5 holes.
ESPN reported that McIlroy said he drove the ball particularly well and that the round continued a trend of putting the ball in play to create scoring opportunities. Hojgaard, the only leader to play in the afternoon wave, reached 6 under with four holes remaining before taking a double bogey on the 16th.
Cantlay recorded five birdies in his first 10 holes and made several par saves late in the round.
Scottie Scheffler shot 2-under 68. Scheffler said he wished he could have gotten a few more shots out of the round and that two bogeys hurt his total. McIlroy noted that The Renaissance Club has the look of links golf though it is not links turf.
The British Open begins next week at Royal Birkdale.
