Medicaid Reimbursements to Planned Parenthood Resume July 5 After One-Year Pause

Federal Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood for non-abortion services resumed July 5, 2026, after a one-year pause. The Washington Examiner reported that the pause had been included in the GOP’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The pause covered services such as sexually transmitted infection testing and birth control at the organization’s clinics.

As of January 2025, 57 Planned Parenthood clinics had closed nationwide, according to an analysis by KFF. Planned Parenthood of Iowa City Health Clinic is scheduled to close July 31, 2026, leaving one remaining facility in the state in Des Moines. From September through December 2025, Planned Parenthood provided uncompensated care to 100,000 Medicaid beneficiaries at a cost of $45 million.

Affiliates received nearly $280 million in state funding pledges since the federal pause began, including more than $230 million from California. The Trump administration has restricted other federal funding streams. In April 2026, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health Office of Population Affairs required Title X funding applicants to undergo an alignment review that mandates support for natural family planning and bars providing minors with cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers.

Roughly 50 Planned Parenthood clinics dropped out of the Title X program in 2025 after earlier withholding of tens of millions in funds that were later released following lawsuits. Late in June 2026, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health terminated $67 million in Teen Pregnancy Prevention grants.

Planned Parenthood California Central Coast and Planned Parenthood of the Heartland were among the recipients whose grants ended.
