Medicare Expands Access to Weight-Loss Drugs for Seniors at $50 Copay Starting July 1

Medicare beneficiaries will pay a $50 copay for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs starting July 1 under a policy change announced by the Trump administration. The change expands coverage under Medicare Part D, which previously did not pay for the drugs when used solely for weight loss.

President Trump told workers at a Mack Trucks plant in eastern Pennsylvania that the price cut would apply to drugs including Wegovy, Foundayo and Zepbound. He said the reductions were the largest in U.S. history for prescription medicines and attributed them to a "most favored nations" approach that used tariff threats to align domestic prices with those in other countries.

The TrumpRx discount site, launched in February, had already lowered average monthly costs for some GLP-1 drugs for uninsured patients.

He also discussed lower energy prices after a memorandum of understanding signed last week to end conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. The president noted that oil prices had fallen and that the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq and S&P 500 remained near record highs despite closing lower on the day of the speech.

Trump highlighted provisions in last year's One Big Beautiful Bill Act that eliminated federal taxes on tips, overtime, Social Security benefits and some car-loan interest. A Bethlehem police sergeant spoke at the event about the overtime tax change, saying some officers work more than 40 hours of overtime per pay period.
