Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program to Launch July 1 With $50 Monthly Copay Through 2027

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program will launch July 1 and run through December 31, 2027, Newsweek reported. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will administer the initiative, which lets eligible beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage drug plans obtain Foundayo, Wegovy in injection or tablet form, and Zepbound KwikPen for a flat $50 monthly copay.

The $50 payment covers a 30-day supply and does not count toward annual out-of-pocket totals because the program operates outside normal Part D coverage rules.

Beneficiaries must hold a valid prescription, receive prior authorization, and meet medical criteria such as obesity or related conditions. Healthcare providers submit required documentation through a centralized CMS system. “These treatments are a major medical advancement, but too many seniors are currently unable to access them due to high cost,” CMS Administrator Dr.

Mehmet Oz said in a statement. Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor at the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek that the structure tests whether obesity medications can become a Medicare benefit while leaving questions about access after 2027 unresolved.

Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group, noted that many patients regain weight after stopping the drugs, which may make the medications a lifelong requirement for some users.

The program is scheduled to end after 2027 unless Congress or CMS extends it or integrates the medications into standard Part D benefits.
