Melissa Barrera Discusses Accusations and Firing After Gaza Posts

Melissa Barrera addressed accusations of antisemitism tied to her comments on the Gaza conflict during an interview published May 6, 2026. She said those who leveled the accusations still deny that events in Gaza constitute a genocide, adding that the two sides would never agree and that the accusers were factually incorrect.

in 2023 In late 2023, after the October 7 attacks, Barrera posted daily messages on Instagram that called for peace, criticized the Israeli government for killing Palestinian civilians, and compared Gaza to a concentration camp. She also posted links to fundraising efforts for Palestinian human rights organizations and shared articles by Holocaust scholars that accused Israel of committing genocide.

One month after the posts began, Barrera was removed from her lead role in the film Scream 7. She was also let go from her talent agency. Barrera described the circumstances as a perfect storm because she is a woman of color in the industry who had gained some recognition but lacked the prominence to avoid being made an example.

She added that she was well-known enough for articles and media coverage yet not influential enough for colleagues to intervene on her behalf.
