A memorial service for 16 Utumishi Girls students who died in a school fire is underway at Gilgil Stadium on 12 June 2026. First Lady Rachel Ruto is leading the ceremony, which has drawn senior government officials, hundreds of bereaved families, and members of the public. The students died in a fire last month.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba is among the officials present. A student identified as Cynthia delivered a tribute during the service. She wished those still receiving treatment a speedy recovery and called for strength and unity among her schoolmates.
The bodies of 15 victims are at the stadium and will be released to families after the service. One student was buried on Sunday in Kwale County after her body was released earlier.
