The U.S. Army's ammunition plant in Mesquite, Texas, has produced no metal projectile parts for 155mm artillery rounds as of July 2026. The $469 million facility opened in May 2024 under a contract with General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems that required it to manufacture 30,000 parts per month.
The plant was expected to provide 29 percent of the components needed to reach the Army's target of 100,000 rounds per month by October 2025. Production across all sites stood at 36,000 rounds per month as of March 2026. The United States has depleted its 155mm inventory by 3.6 million rounds over the past four years, with more than 3 million supplied to Ukraine, 112,000 used for training and testing, and 218,000 sold to other countries.
The Army contracting office issued a stop-work order in August 2025 while assessing whether the contractor could fulfill its obligations. Only three facilities currently produce 155mm projectile metal parts. The Pentagon projects monthly output will reach 71,000 rounds by September 2026.
