Meta Platforms announced on Monday a $115 million program that provides free five-week training courses and guaranteed employment in skilled trades for data center work. The initiative, called "America's workforce academy," will first operate in Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio and Texas.

The company stated that the program is open to qualified veterans, career changers and others seeking entry into the skilled trades. Every graduate will receive a verified, industry-standard credential in fields such as electrical work, mechanical systems and plumbing, according to the company's statement.

Meta cited a nationwide shortage of fiber technicians, welders, plumbers and electricians needed to build data centers. Technology companies are expanding data center capacity to support artificial intelligence development.

The U.S. currently has roughly 4,000 data centers, with approximately 3,000 more announced or under construction, according to Apollo Global Management. A 2025 report from the American Edge Project estimates that all data centers will create 4.7 million temporary construction jobs and roughly 700,000 permanent jobs in the U.S. The American Edge Project is a policy advocacy group formed by Meta that promotes tech industry interests.

Some communities have raised concerns that rapid data center construction strains local power grids and raises environmental issues.
