Meta Reaches Settlement With Kentucky School District in Social Media Case
Meta has settled a lawsuit brought by a Kentucky school district that alleged social media platforms contributed to addiction and mental health issues among students. The agreement ends a scheduled June trial in California federal court.
New York PostMeta has settled a lawsuit filed by a Kentucky school district that accused the company of contributing to social media addiction among teenagers. The settlement avoids a trial that had been set to begin June 15 in Oakland, California. The Kentucky case was one of more than 1,200 similar claims consolidated in California federal court.
Other defendants including YouTube, Snap and TikTok reached settlements last week.
Both sides declined to comment on financial terms.
The Kentucky district had sought more than $60 million in damages along with court orders that would restrict certain platform features. A Meta spokesperson said the company resolved the case amicably and remains focused on tools such as Teen Accounts that give parents controls over teen accounts.
Plaintiffs' attorneys stated their focus remains on pursuing justice for the remaining districts that have filed cases.
The Kentucky case had been viewed as a test of legal arguments that other districts plan to use. Meta still faces more than 2,400 pending lawsuits from schools, state attorneys general and individuals. The next scheduled case, brought by a school district in Arizona, is set for January 2027.
Meta had argued in pretrial filings that its chief executive should testify in person only once, with other plaintiffs relying on a videotaped record.
