Meta Releases Muse AI Image Model That Uses Public Instagram Photos
Meta released the Muse image-generation model Tuesday and Muse Spark 1.1 on Thursday. The tools allow editing of public Instagram photos and expand developer access through an API. Privacy concerns were raised by analysts and a talent agency over use of user images without explicit consent.

Meta released the Muse image-generation model on Tuesday, Washington Examiner reported. The system draws on Instagram for social context, composes from multiple references, and applies self-refining behavior. It is available in the Meta app and on meta.ai, on Instagram stories in the United States, and on WhatsApp in select countries, with rollout to Facebook expected soon.
Meta stated that Muse Image is its most advanced image generation model yet and follows instructions faithfully while editing with precision. The company also released Muse Spark 1.1 on Thursday as an upgraded version of its reasoning engine. Developers can access the model through a public preview of the Meta Model API in Thinking mode.
Meta plans to deploy seven gigawatts of computing infrastructure and expects to spend up to $145 billion on AI infrastructure this year, according to a memo reviewed by Reuters. The company has secured multiyear supply agreements with Samsung Electronics and SanDisk. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Agentic AI technology is progressing more slowly than expected.
Users can manipulate and edit images from any public Instagram account, including profile pictures, unless they change a setting under the Sharing and reuse tab. Existing AI-generated images remain even if a user later disables the feature. Muse Video is scheduled to become available to creators and Meta AI.
Electronic Frontier Foundation analyst Thorin Klosowski said the setting should be opt-in for Instagram users because it represents a new use of photos posted publicly for years. Creative Artists Agency stated that no one's name, image, likeness, voice or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent.
