Mets' Mark Vientos Fractures Hand After Hit by Pitch in 7-3 Win Over Royals

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos fractured his right hand after being hit by a pitch in the second inning of a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on July 9. ESPN reported that Vientos was struck by a 92 mph fastball thrown by Michael Wacha. He initially stayed in the game but was replaced at third base to start the third inning by Brett Baty, who shifted from second base.
Ewing moved from center field to second base for his first MLB appearance at that position after playing 53 games there in the minors. Interim manager Andy Green said Vientos is headed to the injured list and remains under evaluation. "I'm just disappointed for what he's going through right now today," Green said.
Green added that he did not yet know the full extent of the injury or whether surgery would be needed. 211 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 73 games during the 2026 season. The start marked his second of the year at third base and his first against a right-handed pitcher since June 29.
Tyrone Taylor replaced Ewing in center field and hit a game-tying home run in his first at-bat during a five-run fifth inning. The injury will be Vientos' third MLB injured-list stint, following a left wrist injury in August 2023 and a strained right hamstring in June 2025.
