Mexico's president on Tuesday told a U.S. ambassador that ambassadors should focus on coordination and collaboration rather than internal political affairs. The statement came during the president's regular morning news conference. The president said ambassadors must respect the internal political affairs of their host countries.

The comments followed a post on X by the ambassador that described drug trafficking cooperation as a shared security challenge and warned against turning it into a political dispute.

Tensions between the two countries have risen over efforts to combat drug trafficking groups. The president has declined offers to deploy foreign troops and has instead sent thousands of Mexican troops to the border. Relations frayed further after reports that foreign agents participated in a raid on a drug lab without federal approval.

Days later, U.S. authorities announced drug trafficking charges against a state governor and nine other current and former officials. The governor belongs to the president's political party. The president has refused to hand the governor over until more evidence is provided.

Last week Mexico's congress approved a constitutional amendment making foreign interference grounds to annul election results. On Sunday the president described the indictment as unprecedented in bilateral relations.
