Mexico City to Cap Crowds at 25,000 and Double Police for Mexico-England World Cup Match
Mexico City will deploy 6,000 officers along Paseo de la Reforma and cap attendance at 25,000 at the Angel of Independence monument for Sunday's round-of-16 game. The measures follow four deaths during celebrations after Mexico's win over Ecuador earlier this week.

Mexico City will double police presence and restrict access to key viewing sites ahead of Sunday's Mexico-England FIFA World Cup match after four fans died during post-match celebrations earlier this week. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada announced the security plan on Friday. Officials will allow free entry to the Angel of Independence monument and the Zócalo but limit capacity at both locations.
Only 25,000 people will be permitted at the Angel, with additional fans directed to screens along Paseo de la Reforma once that number is reached. Security along Paseo de la Reforma will increase to 6,000 officers, twice the number used June 30. Another 7,500 officers will surround Estadio Azteca and 3,300 will be stationed at the Zócalo.
A security perimeter will bar street vendors and delivery drivers near the Angel, and selected Metro and Metrobus lines will close. Sale of alcohol on city-center streets will be banned from early Sunday morning until Monday. Consumption will remain allowed inside restaurants, hotels, theaters and similar venues.
The Mexico City Attorney General's Office continues to investigate the four deaths, which occurred June 30 near Paseo de la Reforma and were attributed to asphyxiation and cardiorespiratory arrest. England's team arrived at its Santa Fe hotel late Friday under heavy security. The round-of-16 match is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m.
