Two filmmakers from Mexico City completed Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature after receiving guidance from a well-known director. The film will stream worldwide on Netflix on June 12. The project began when the pair cold-emailed the director as teenagers and included images of their makeup and special-effects work.
The director replied and later helped them secure distribution deals first in Mexico and then internationally.
The film follows a young writer whose dark tales are ignored until she enters her subconscious and meets the monsters she created. She then attempts to restore balance between fiction and reality before both realms collapse. The filmmakers said the director helped resolve doubts and debts that arose during production.
They described him as a mentor who encouraged them to continue despite outside criticism.
Netflix will release the feature on June 12.
Viewers familiar with stop-motion titles such as “Coraline” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” are expected to recognize the style.
