Mexico has dispatched its first shipment of natural gas to Asia, Semafor reported. The cargo originates from the country's new liquefied natural gas export terminal on the Pacific coast and is now en route. Five years earlier the primary routes for international oil and gas trade ran from Russian pipelines to Europe and from the Middle East to Asia through the Strait of Hormuz.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the U.S. war in Iran have changed those routes. Fatih Birol, chief of the International Energy Agency, wrote in Foreign Policy that nations are seeking to minimize energy-supply risk through renewables and diversification of supply.
