Michigan Reports 1,562 Cyclosporiasis Cases Since Late June, 44 Hospitalized

Michigan health officials recorded 1,562 reports of cyclosporiasis as of July 10, up from the state's typical annual total of about 50 cases. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said 44 people have been hospitalized since reports began arriving June 22. The outbreak was first identified in late June when the Monroe County Health Department investigated a cluster of illnesses.

Most cases remain concentrated in Southeast Michigan, with multiple reports in Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Oakland, Shiawassee, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. As of July 9, the illness had been confirmed in 40 counties total, and Monroe County alone accounted for 215 cases.

CBS News reported that at least 31 states have documented cyclosporiasis cases since early May, including Illinois, New York and Texas.

Cyclospora cayetanensis, the parasite responsible, produces symptoms such as frequent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloating, nausea and fatigue, with some patients also reporting body aches, headache or vomiting. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services launched a dedicated outbreak webpage that posts daily case counts by 11 a.m. ET.

Hospitalization figures and more detailed data will be released each Thursday. Health officials have not identified a specific source. Previous U.S. and Canadian outbreaks have been traced to bagged salad mixes, fresh cilantro, fresh basil, raspberries, snow peas and scallions.

The department advised restaurants and commercial kitchens in Southeast Michigan to wash fresh produce under running water and cook it when possible.
