Michigan Confirms 708 Cyclosporiasis Cases in 10 Days
Health officials recorded a sharp rise in cyclosporiasis infections centered in southeastern Michigan. Cases have also appeared in Ohio and three other states. Federal agencies continue to investigate the source linked to fresh produce.

Michigan health officials confirmed 708 cases of cyclosporiasis over about 10 days as of July 7, 2026. The total exceeds the state's usual annual count of 40 to 50 cases. Most infections have occurred in the southeastern part of the state.
Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive for Michigan, described the increase as highly unusual. Dr. Anurag Malani, vice chief of staff at Trinity Health Ann Arbor, said cases could reach 1,000.
ProMedica Health System reported 411 cases as of July 6. Cases have also been reported in Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, and New Jersey. Dr. Brian Kaminski of ProMedica said infections in southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio form an epidemic cluster.
The CDC recorded 145 cases across 17 states from early May through June 16. The FDA and CDC are monitoring the situation. An FDA spokesperson said the agency cannot yet characterize the numbers as definitively unusual while the investigation continues.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite found on fresh produce and does not spread person to person. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and nausea. The illness is treated with the antibiotic Bactrim.
Some patients have required hospitalization for dehydration, though no deaths have been reported. Testing turnaround times have lengthened from 24 hours to two or three days. Officials are reviewing patient grocery lists and restaurant visits to identify the source.
The CDC made routine tracking of the parasite optional in July 2025.
