Michigan Hires Mike Boynton as Interim Coach

Michigan named Mike Boynton interim coach for the 2026-27 season after Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks, CBS Sports reported Monday. Boynton spent the past two seasons as an assistant under May and coordinated the team's defense during its 2025 national title run.

The school said Boynton could be promoted to permanent head coach in the coming days or weeks. Officials cited his seven seasons of high-major head coaching experience and familiarity with the current roster as reasons for the interim appointment.

Boynton previously served as head coach at Oklahoma State from 2017 until his dismissal in 2024. The program received NCAA penalties in 2020 tied to an assistant coach's involvement in a recruiting investigation, though Boynton was not charged. After his departure from Oklahoma State, May hired Boynton to join the Michigan staff.

Under the new arrangement, Boynton will coordinate defensive efforts that ranked first nationally in efficiency during the most recent season.

Michigan returns starting guards Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney along with the nation's No. 4 recruiting class and No. 12 transfer class. The team is ranked No. 3 in preseason projections and projected as a No. 2 seed. A 15-day transfer portal window will open for Michigan players within a week after the official announcement of Boynton's role.

Officials said his existing relationships with players position him to limit departures during that period. >May said in April: "He's just as good as I am. He's just as prepared. " If Boynton retains the roster, he will have an opportunity to demonstrate readiness for the permanent position ahead of the 2026-27 season.
