Michigan Reports More Than 300 Cyclosporiasis Cases as of July 2

Michigan health authorities confirmed more than 300 cases of cyclosporiasis as of Thursday, July 2, 2026, according to @ABC reported. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said the state normally records about 50 cases each year. The CDC reported 145 cases in 17 states excluding Michigan as of June 15, with at least 20 hospitalizations linked to those infections.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which spreads through food or water contaminated with feces. Outbreaks have previously been tied to imported fresh produce such as raspberries, basil, snow peas, mesclun lettuce and cilantro. The typical incubation period ranges from two days to two weeks, with symptoms most often appearing after one week.

Lynn Sutfin, public information officer for MDHHS, stated officials are working with state and local partners to identify the source. She added that while most cases cause cramping, bloating and watery diarrhea, the effects can be more severe for immunocompromised individuals. Dr.

Zoe Weiss said the most common symptom is explosive watery diarrhea, along with possible cramping, bloating, low-grade fever, nausea and vomiting. She noted the infection is unlikely to spread person to person because the parasite requires days to weeks of sporulation in the environment. Dr.

Peter Chin-Hong observed that the United States is now seeing more domestic cases in addition to those linked to imported produce. The infection is treated with the oral antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for 10 days. @ABC reported that doctors recommend washing produce thoroughly, removing bruised sections and refrigerating pre-cut items to reduce risk.

Individuals with sudden ongoing watery diarrhea in affected areas should seek medical care for prompt diagnosis and treatment.
