The University of Michigan's regents plan to review a probe into the athletic department's culture. A decision on athletic director Warde Manuel's future is also expected soon.
abcnews.go.comThe University of Michigan's regents are expected to discuss an investigation into the culture of its athletic department on Thursday, ESPN reported. As part of the review, a decision on the future of athletic director Warde Manuel is expected in the coming days. Michigan commissioned the investigation in December following the firing of head football coach Sherrone Moore.
Moore was dismissed for having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. After the firing, Moore drove to the home of staff member Paige Shiver and confronted her. He was arrested and later agreed to a plea deal for misdemeanor malicious use of a telecommunications device and misdemeanor trespassing.
The report, prepared by the Chicago law firm Jenner & Block, has cost over $11 million. A university spokesman told ESPN on Sunday that the school had nothing to report and declined further comment. Manuel, 58, has served as athletic director since 2016 under a contract that runs through 2030.
His annual compensation under a deal signed in December 2024 is nearly $2.4 million, including deferred compensation. The department has recorded national titles in men's basketball in 2026, football in 2023, men's gymnastics in 2025 and women's gymnastics in 2021. Moore was fired in December 2025.
Earlier, Michigan hired Dusty May as head basketball coach from FAU in March 2024. May left to coach the Dallas Mavericks nearly two months after Manuel announced a long-term deal at the 2026 national-title parade.
