Abdul El-Sayed attended and spoke at six events hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America between 2017 and 2020, Fox News reported. One of those appearances was a 2019 fundraiser he headlined that raised $10,000 for the group. DSA organizers at the event described him as a longtime friend of Detroit DSA.
El-Sayed's first recorded DSA event took place during his 2017 campaign for Michigan governor. Additional events he addressed focused on Medicare for All and the Green New Deal. On May 3, 2026, he spoke before Sen.
Bernie Sanders at Mumford High School in Detroit. Sanders endorsed El-Sayed for the U.S. Senate seat on the day the candidate launched his campaign. The Vermont senator had previously backed El-Sayed's 2017 gubernatorial bid.
Retiring Sen. Gary Peters endorsed Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary instead. El-Sayed has told interviewers he is not a socialist. In remarks to the Wall Street Journal he said he is not technically or practically DSA.
He told CNN that he believes in capitalism that must be regulated. Tax returns show El-Sayed and his wife earned $686,069 in 2025. On July 7, 2026, he spoke with reporters after a debate at WoodTV studios in Grand Rapids.
The El-Sayed campaign did not respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment on Tuesday.
