Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed was questioned Wednesday about describing himself as a physician without holding a current medical license in New York or Michigan. The interviewer noted that El-Sayed’s LinkedIn page lists him as a physician and that he referred to himself as “a physician and epidemiologist” during an April debate.
El-Sayed replied that the issue is not about his title or education but about whether children receive a good education.
Background on credentials El-Sayed said he served as health director for the city of Detroit and as director of the Department of Health, Human, and Veterans Services in Wayne County, Michigan. He stated he graduated from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.
The candidate also discussed his past role hosting a healthcare podcast and his decision to delay release of tax returns until after the Aug. 4 Democratic primary, citing complexity from property owned abroad by his wife and her family. El-Sayed is currently leading Rep.
Haley Stevens in the Michigan Senate Democratic primary.
