Microplastics Found in Over 75% of Tested Pet Food Brands

Microplastics appeared in more than three-quarters of the pet food products examined by researchers at the universities of Sussex and Exeter. The team tested 19 brands and found particles in 16, including several widely recognized labels. Cheaper value-range foods for dogs, cats, and wild animals contained higher levels than more expensive products.

Dry food showed greater particle concentrations, yet wet food resulted in higher daily intake because animals must consume larger quantities to meet energy needs.

Researchers stated that the origins of the particles remain unclear. They called for further study to determine whether ingredient quality, packaging, or processing methods are the primary contributors. The universities urged the government to require processed-food manufacturers to test for microplastic contamination, similar to existing rules for chemical pollutants.

The Food Standards Agency has been contacted for comment.

A UK Pet Food spokesperson said member products meet all current regulations and food-safety standards. The group noted that microplastics occur throughout the environment and said the industry continues to work with regulators and scientists. Alison Thomas, head of veterinary standards at Blue Cross, said exposure could also come from plastic bowls, bottles, toys, and packaging.

She added that more detail is needed on the greatest sources of risk and any long-term health effects.
